Facebook Offline
How to appear offline on FacebookGet daily news updates directly to your inbox
Facebook has introduced a whole heap of new privacy settings as the GDPR law is set to take force.
But one of the most useful tools has actually been around for ages - and it's a simple switch that means you're not disturbed by other friends who can see you're online.
All it takes is switching off the chat box on the right hand side of your dashboard to have your incoming chats redirected to your inbox as messages.
Once you've logged into Facebook , find the gear menu button at the bottom right corner of your screen and click it. Then select that Turn Off Chat option and you'll see the entire box is suddenly greyed out.
You'll now be able to see who else is online, but they'll have no idea that you're available to be pestered.
Where it can get a bit tricky is if you're using the standalone Facebook Messenger app at the same time. Switching off chat in Facebook's main (desktop) mode doesn't take away your visibility on Messenger.

If you want to appear offline on Facebook Messenger, these are the steps you need to follow.
Open the Facebook Messenger app and select your address book.
Tap the Active tab and then toggle the switch displayed next to your username to "Off" .
There's also a way to appear offline to just specific friends. Basically, you have to block them.
In order to block a contact on Facebook Messenger, you need to find them in your address book and tap on their name to open up a new conversation.

Tap their name at the top of the chat window and you'll be offered the option to either ignore messages or block them outright. Choose the latter if you want them never to know if you're online or not.
Don't worry, you can always unblock a contact at a later date if you decide you want them to know your online availability.
Just a side note here - if you're using Facebook on your desktop, you can also selectively toggle who sees whether you're online or not. As well as turning off chat completely, you can turn off chat for only some people - just enter their name in the dialogue box that appears.

The "snooze" button allows you to temporarily unfollow a person, page or group, meaning you won't see any of their posts for 30 days.
They won't be notified of the change, and the setting can be reversed at any time. Facebook will also notify you when the snooze period is about to end.
"Seeing too many photos of your uncle’s new cat? Is your friend tempting you with endless photos of ramen on her Japan trip?" said Shruthi Muraleedharan, product manager at Facebook.
"With Snooze, you don't have to unfollow or unfriend permanently, rather just stop seeing someone's posts for a short period of time."
To "snooze" a friend on Facebook, all you have to do is click on the menu icon in the top-right corner of a post, and select "snooze" from the drop-down menu.
If you're looking for a more permanent solution, you can also unfollow friends, or hide or report individual posts in this way.
