How to delete a Facebook account permanently in 3 simple steps
How to delete a Facebook account permanently in 3 simple steps
Whether you’re concerned about your online privacy or just getting tired of constant status updates from old school friends that you’ve since realised aren’t actually that cool, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to delete your Facebook account – and it’s not as hard as you might think.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of how to delete Facebook step-by-step, including outlining the difference between ‘deactivating’ your account, and deleting it entirely.

If you’re thinking about deleting your account then you’re not alone. Between the Cambridge Analtyica scandal and increasing worries about the effect social media has on our individual and societal health, people are increasingly turning away from these sites that have come to dominate the internet.

Whatever your reason, deleting or deactivating your account is actually pretty easy. Here’s how you do it.

How to delete or deactivate a Facebook account – what’s the difference?

There are two different ways to get your Facebook account offline. The first is deactivating, which means:
You can reactivate your account whenever you want
People can’t see your Facebook Timeline, or search for you
Some information may remain visible (like messages you’ve sent)
Facebook saves your account info (like friends and interests) in case you reactivate

But deleting your account is a much more serious matter. If you delete your account:
Facebook delays deletion for a few days after the request is made. If you log in during the grace period, the deletion is cancelled
You can’t regain access to your Facebook account once it’s deleted
It can take up to 90 days for your data that’s stored in backup systems to be deleted. However, your info isn’t accessible on Facebook during this time
Some things aren’t stored in your account, like messages that you’ve sent to friends – these will remain active
Copies of some material (like log records) may remain in Facebook’s database, but are “disassociated from personal identifiers,” according to the company

Basically, deactivating is a way to cool off from Facebook for a while, while deleting is a permanent solution that you should think carefully about before choosing.

How to deactivate Facebook account

To deactivate your Facebook account, follow these four steps:

1. Click the account menu down arrow at the top right of any Facebook page in your web browser
2. Select ‘Settings’
3. Choose ‘General’ in the left column
4. Click ‘Manage your account’
5. Press ‘Deactivate your account’, and then follow the steps to confirm your decision

To reactivate your account after deactivating it, simply log into Facebook your e-mail and password. Your profile will be entirely reinstated.

How to delete Facebook account

Deleting your Facebook account is a serious decision, so make sure it’s something you really want to do. Whether you like it or not, social media is ingrained in society, and your Facebook profile can affect friendships, job prospects, and social opportunities. Remember that there are also ways to secure your Facebook privacy settings., if that’s your particular concern.

Plus, you may miss out on some ‘dank memes’ by deleting Facebook, and however grating it is in places, it’s also useful for plenty of things, such as keeping up with friends from abroad and organising events.

If you’re set on binning the social network off for good, click the following link and choose the ‘Delete my account’ option:

How To Del Facebook Account

How To Del Facebook Account
How To Del Facebook Account
How to Delete Your Facebook Account
Recent events might have you contemplating a break from Facebook. That's not an option for everyone; in that case, just tighten up your account settings. But if having your data mined for political purposes without your permission sketches you out, there are ways to extricate yourself from the massive social network.

If you're ready for a social media break, here's how to delete Facebook.
Deactivating

Facebook gives you two options: two options: deactivate or delete

The first couldn't be easier. On the desktop, click the drop-down menu at the top-right of your screen and select Settings. Click General on the top left, Edit next to "Manage Account." Scroll down and you'll see a "Deactivate My Account" link at the bottom. (Here's the direct link to use while logged in.)

If you're on your mobile device, such as using Facebook for iOS, similarly go to Settings > Account Settings > General > Manage Account > Deactivate.

Facebook doesn't take this lightly—it'll do whatever it can to keep you around, including emotional blackmail about how much your friends will miss you.

As such, "Deactivation" is not the same as leaving Facebook. Yes, your timeline will disappear, you won't have access to the site or your account via mobile apps, friends can't post or contact you, and you'll lose access to all those third-party services that use (or require) Facebook for login. But Facebook does not delete the account. Why? So you can reactivate it later.

Just in case that expected re-activation isn't in your future, you should download a copy of all your data on Facebook—posts, photos, videos, chats, etc.—from the settings menu (under "General"). What you find might surprise you, as our Neil Rubenking found out.

To fully delete your Facebook account forever and ever, go to the Delete My Account page at facebook.com/help/delete_account. Just be aware that, per the Facebook data use policy, "after you remove information from your profile or delete your account, copies of that information may remain viewable elsewhere to the extent it has been shared with others, it was otherwise distributed pursuant to your privacy settings, or it was copied or stored by other users."

Translation: if you wrote a comment on a friend's status update or photo, it will remain even after you delete your own profile. Some of your posts and pictures may hang around for as long as 90 days after deletion, as well, though just on Facebook servers, not live on the site.
Deletion on Behalf of Others

If you want to notify Facebook about a user you know is under 13, you can report the account, you narc. If Facebook can "reasonably verify" the account is used by someone underage—Facebook bans kids under 13 to comply with federal law—it will delete the account instantly, without informing anyone.

There's a separate form to request removal of accounts for people who are medically incapacitated and thus unable to use Facebook. For this to work, the requester must prove they are the guardian of the person in question (such as by power of attorney) as well as offer an official note from a doctor or medical facility that spells out the incapacitation. Redact any info necessary to keep some privacy, such as medical account numbers, addresses, etc.

If a user has passed away, a legacy contact—a Facebook friend or relative who was designated by the account owner before they died—can get access to that person's timeline, once approved by Facebook. The legacy contact may need to provide a link to an obituary or other documentation such as a death certificate. Facebook will "memorialize" the page so the deceased timeline lives on (under control of the legacy contact, who can't post as you), or if preferred, remove it.

Designate a specific legacy contact person to handle your account after your passing. You can find that under Settings > General > Manage Account > Your Legacy Contact. Once you set one up, you'll get a notification every year from Facebook to double check that the contact should stay the same, unless you opt out of that. You can also take the extra step of making sure that after you die, if the legacy contact does report you to Facebook as deceased, your account gets deleted (even if the legacy contact wants the timeline to be memorialized).

As an admin with a Facebook page connected to your profile, it pays to understand what account deactivation is. If you plan to deactivate your account, you need to know how it affects your Facebook profile and page. It's also important to understand the differences between deactivating your account and deleting your account.

Deactivation

Deactivating your account is less drastic than deleting the account. The option enables you to practically delete your Facebook, only you'll have the option to return and reactivate the account. When you deactivate your account, Facebook hides your Timeline, photos, profile and other content from the rest of the site; it's like you're not even there. Friends can still see messages you sent them before you deactivated your account, but they cannot respond to them. When you deactivate your account, you lose admin privileges for any Facebook pages you run.

Sole Admin

If you're the only administrator of your company's Facebook page, think twice before deactivating your account. If you add another administrator, he'll be able to manage and update the page in your absence. When you deactivate after adding a new admin, you lose your admin privileges. If you do not appoint a new admin, your page becomes unpublished. While this doesn't delete the page, nobody will be able to access or like it, including you. When you reactivate your account, you'll have the option to republish the page, keeping all previous content and likes. Edit your page's admins by visiting the page, clicking the "Edit Page" drop-down and selecting "Admin Roles."

Deletion

Deleting your account is the permanent option for getting rid of Facebook. If you know you're completely done with the site and will never again want access to your profile, friends, photos or any other content on the site, deletion gets it done. Facebook assures your account deletion will not happen right away, giving you a few days to change your mind and cancel. After that time, though, you'll lose all access to your account and no other users will be able to see any of your content.

Reactivation

The key benefit to deactivation over deletion is the ability to change your mind and come back. Reactivating your account only requires you to visit Facebook and sign in again. Since you may not have used the account in a while, you might have forgotten the password. If so, Facebook provides a link for resetting your password. You need access to the email address connected to your Facebook account. While reactivating your account restores your friends list, Timeline and other content, you do not automatically regain admin privileges for any pages you formerly ran. You'll have to regain your privileges through being added as an admin by a current admin. Alternately, if you were the page's sole admin, you'll see the option to republish the page when you sign in to reactivate the account.

6 Things to Do Before You Delete Your Facebook Account
You've probably thought about deleting your Facebook account before, but for one reason or another you've been unable to commit. Maybe you're applying for a job and don't want your future employer to see pics of you at college frat parties. Or maybe you just can't stand one more depressing status update.
If you're serious this time about deleting your Facebook account, escaping the social networking giant can be a lot more complicated than you would think. There are necessary steps you should take before pressing that delete account button.
Remember, deleting your account is very different from deactivatingyour account. You can deactivate your account at any point, and when you want to return everything is as you left it. While your account is deactivated, people on Facebook will not be able to search for you, but some information like messages you've sent may still be visible to others.

If you permanently delete your account, you will not be able to regain access to your account again, ever. Most personally identifiable information is removed from the Facebook database, but some may remain such as your name if you sent a message to someone else.
If you're planning to delete your Facebook account permanently, read on to learn about what steps you should take first.
1. Check Your Connected Apps
There are a lot of apps and websites that require you to log in using your Facebook username and password, and when you delete your Facebook account you lose access to these sites as well. You can check this by clicking on your Account Settings, then Apps in the left column. Popular apps that use Facebook login are Pinterest, Pandora, Foursquare, Spotify and Instagram. Some apps allow you to change your form of log in by using your email address or Twitter handle, for example. However, there are some sites that don't let you decouple your Facebook account from their app, like Spotify.

If you still want to use Spotify, your best bet is not to delete your Facebook account. If you want to almost delete your account to maintain your Spotify profile, you could remove all of your friends, change the email address associated with your Facebook account to one you don't use very often or turn off all email notifications for all apps, including Spotify, and lastly remove all of your data from Facebook and delete all of your activity, photos, etc. Though exhausting, taking this approach would allow you to keep all of the playlists you have made on Spotify and the songs you have been sent by friends, rather than starting over again.

If that sounds like way too much work for you, then you can always deactivate your Facebook account, and setup a new Facebook account with an email you only use for Spotify, and then authenticate Spotify from there. In taking this approach, you would lose all existing Spotify activity, so unless you are a new user and don't have much built up — the first option is probably the best, albeit time-consuming.

The big lesson here is to make sure your connected apps will let you change your form of login before you deactivate your Facebook account. You won't be able to change anything retroactively. If you have already deactivated your Facebook account and you can't login to these connected apps, you could reactivate your Facebook account and follow the steps listed above.
2. Download Your Facebook Information

For users who want to delete all history of their Facebook days but who still want a record of everything they've done on the site, Facebook has developed an easy way to download that information. Go to your Account Settings, click "General" in the left-hand column, then click on "Download a copy of your Facebook data", finish by clicking "Start My Archive"."

The information in this download is available in three places:

Downloaded Info: This includes timeline information like posts you've shared, messages, photos, a history of the conversations you've had in Facebook chat, a list of your friends and much more.

Expanded Archive: This is additional info, and contains even more account details like logins, cookies, apps you've subscribed to, people you have unfriended and much more.

Activity Log: This is a comprehensive history of all your activity from posts you've commented on or liked, apps you've used, and anything you've ever searched for.

For a full breakdown of what information falls into each category, check out this Facebook chart. As you can see, the information available for download is extensive, so make sure you save it in a safe place in case you need to access it later.

Also, if you are just interested in saving certain conversations you've had with friends you can forward them to your email address. First go to the message stream and click on the Actions tab at the top. Next, scroll down to Forward Messages and select the ones you want to forward.

3. Ask for Your Friends' Birthdays

Facebook has become a reliable and convenient resource for remembering friends birthdays, so if you no longer have your account you might slip up and forget. Instead, be proactive in reaching out to your friends and tell them that you are deleting your Facebook account, but would still like to remember their birthday. Another way of doing this is to use the incredibly annoying Facebook Birthday's app. You could include a disclaimer at the top telling people that you're just using it to gather all of your friends' birthdays before you delete your account.
4. Ask for Contact Information

It's incredible to think about how much communication happens over Facebook alone. Before deleting your account, make sure that you have other ways to keep in touch with your friends, whether that is through email, texting or phone calls. Download that contact information for anyone you're worried about losing contact with.

5. Store Your Facebook Information on the Cloud

Backupify.com is a great way to store consumer web application data on the cloud. There are both paid and free services available, with the free service giving you 1GB of storage, or you can get up to 25GB for the paid service. The backups occur automatically, and you can download critical items as PDFs as well. Backupify files are stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS), which are subject to the highest security and boast a 99.9% up time.
6. Optimize Your SEO Before You Go

If you're leaving the Facebook community, make sure you are still active on enough other social platforms to maximize your SEO. You want to make sure that you are still searchable by friends or potential employers.

Are you seriously thinking about deleting your Facebook account? Let us know why in the comments.
