Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why don’t I have the option to change a page’s Facebook name?
A: You need to have a full admin role to be able to change a Facebook page name. Editors, moderators, advertisers, analysts, and live contributors cannot change a Facebook’s page name. If you were just given the admin role, try to log out and log back into your account.

Q: Why does it take so long for Facebook to approve my page name request?
A: Facebook page name approval may take longer for some pages. Normally, a request for a change to a Facebook Page name is approved in one to three days. If your request is not approved after that time period, try to resend the request. Also, see to it that your requested page name is allowed on Facebook. Abusive terms, misleading words, improper and unnecessary use of capitalization and punctuation, are some of the common reasons why requests are not approved.

Q: I just changed my Facebook Page name. Now I want to change it again. Is there a limit to Facebook Page name changes?
A: Currently, you are allowed to change a Facebook Page name an indefinite number of times. However, constantly changing your Facebook Page’s name may create a red flag in the system. It is advisable to limit the number of times you request to change the name.

How to Change Your Name on Facebook
Whether you’ve just gotten married, no longer identify with your birth name, or just want to change the overly formal “Robert” to “Rob” on your profile, here’s how to change the name you’re using on Facebook.

Before diving in, it’s worth having a look at Facebook’s names policy. You’re required to use “the name [you] go by in everyday life”, but this gives you a fair amount of flexibility. My name on Facebook is Harry and it’s what everyone calls me, but it’s not the name on my birth certificate.

You also can’t use things like:
Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation.
Characters from multiple languages.
Titles of any kind.
Words or phrases in place of a name.
Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.

As long as you don’t use anything too ridiculous, you should be able to change your name to whatever you want without Facebook having a hissy fit. It’s also worth noting, once you’ve changed your name, you won’t be able to change it again for another 60 days.

To change your name on Facebook, head to the Settings screen. You can get to it by clicking on the arrow in the top right corner and then clicking Settings.

Next to Name, click Edit.

You’ll then be able to edit and change your name to whatever you want.

Click Review Changes and then enter your password and click Save Changes.

If you’ve got a nickname, professional name or other name that you don’t necessarily go by in everyday life but want attached to your Facebook profile, click Add Other Names. These other names will help people find you in search, so for example, you’d show up for searches for both your married and maiden names.

Click “Add A Nickname, A Birth Name…”

…and select the kind of name you want to add from the dropdown.

Enter whatever name you want.

Click Save Changes and the new name will be added to your Facebook profile.

Add A Nickname On Facebook

                                                    Add A Nickname On Facebook
                                                   Add A Nickname On Facebook

How to Add Nicknames to Your Facebook Profile

Recently, Facebook has renewed its efforts to force users to use their real names, annoying many and causing a lot of confusion. Here’s how to add an other name such as a nickname, alias, or maiden name to your Facebook profile.

You may not use your so-call real life name for any variety of reasons. Maybe you simply don’t go by your given name, or maybe your pseudonym is how you self-identify. Whatever your particular circumstance, Facebook apparently knows better and will send you the following tersely worded warning that you need to update your name.

Facebook can be pretty annoying, and we’ve covered some of the more notable irritations, such as disabling birthday reminders or blocking game and app requests but, these are things that you can attend to at your convenience. Unfortunately, the “real life” name policy requires more immediate attention.

Luckily, you can add another name, such as a nickname, pseudonym, maiden name, and others to your account, which (if you want) will be displayed at the top of your account in parenthesis next to your “real life” name.

To add other names, you want to click “About” at the top of your timeline.

Next click the “Details About You” category and note the “Other Names” settings.

From here you can add a nickname, birth name, and any other of a number of option.

Understand that Other Names are “always public and help people find you on Facebook,” so if your privacy is super important to you then this option may not be the best choice.

From here, if you want your other name shown at the top of your profile in parenthesis next to your “real life” name, you should check “Show at top of profile.” You’ll be able to preview what this will look like before you commit to it.

That’s how you add other names to your Facebook profile using the main website. Here’s how to do it on Android devices.

Adding Other Names on Android

Using the Android app, tap the three lines in the upper-right corner, scroll down, tap “Account Settings.”

Next, on the Settings screen, tap “General.”

Now, tap “Name.”

Just like on the website, there will be an option to add “Add or change other names” so tap that.

Tap “Add a nickname, a birth name…” and you can follow the same procedure as detailed above.

From hereon, it is largely the same across other platforms but let’s very briefly show you how to do it on your iPhone or iPad.
Adding Other Names on iOS

If you’re using an iPad or iPhone then the steps are largely the same as on other platforms. First tap the arrow in the upper-right corner and from the resulting menu, tap “Settings.”

Now, on the Settings screen tap “Name.”

And, here we are again at the Change Name screen. Under the Other Names option, you now just need to tap “Add or change other names.”

Then, same as on Android, tap “Add a nickname, a birth name…”

Hopefully this is a suitable compromise between displaying your “real life” name and the identity by which you actually want to go by. In any event, if you’ve gotten one of Facebook’s warnings, then this is the your best option to appease them.

Here’s How to Change Your Display Name, Add Other Names in the Facebook App

Did you know Facebook allows users to change their display names, and even add alternate names to their accounts? Our guide will show you how to complete both actions in the Facebook mobile application. Note: These screenshots were captured in the Facebook app on iOS.

Step 1: Tap the three horizontal lines in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap “Settings.”

Step 3: Tap “Account Settings.”

Step 4: Tap “General.”

Step 5: Tap “Name.”

The next step depends on whether you need to change your display name or add another name to your account.

To change your default display name, tap on the “First Name,” “Middle Name” and/or “Last Name” fields to make any necessary changes. Tap “Review Change” to preview your new name. You’ll be able to decide how your name appears on your profile, in terms of whether your last name is listed second or first, and you’ll need to enter your password to confirm your change(s).

To add an additional name to your account, tap “Add a nickname, a birth name …” under the “Other Names” heading.

Once you type the name, you can decide whether this name will be shown at the top of your profile, and then tap “Save” to add the name to your account.

Lastly, you can also add “Other Names” to your account by tapping on the three horizontal lines in the bottom-right corner of the app’s screen, tapping on your name to view your profile, tapping “Edit About” under your profile picture, and tapping “Add a nickname, a birth name …” under the “Other Names” heading.

How To Edit Name On Facebook Page
How To Edit Name On Facebook Page
How I Changed My Facebook Business Page Name

How I changed my Facebook Business Page Name

I started a Facebook page for my business many years ago. I had spent thousands of dollars running ad campaigns and gaining likes. My business was part of a worldwide franchise, so I was using their brand in my Facebook Page Name (which I recommend you don’t do, I found out it can be hard to change!).

When branching out on my own, I wanted to keep the page, and the thousands of followers I had gained through my campaigns and years of running my business. I thought it would be simple enough, follow the Facebook Help instructions and simply request a name change.

Here are the instructions on Facebook to change your page name.
How do I change my Page’s name?

You’ll need to be an admin to request a change to your Page’s name.

To request a change to your Page’s name:
Click About on the left side of your Page
Click Edit Page Info
Enter a new Page name and click Save Changes
Review your request and click Request Change

Seems simple enough, right?

I soon found out… not so simple!

Every time I requested a new name, it would be rejected. After 3 attempts I decided to reach out to my network of professionals in the digital marketing/web space and even they were not sure what to do. Facebook make it extremely hard to change your page name, and even harder to contact someone to find out why!

I turned to Google for answers and I found all sorts of info on the web…

In the e-web marketing blog they say;

“Unfortunately it’s not as simple as that. In fact, for those of us with over 200 ‘likes’, changing your Facebook Page name is not an easy task. The Facebook Help Centre doesn’t provide much assistance either, with the only answer to changing your name being that, well, you can’t. This is clearly a big problem for businesses that have spent time and effort building their fan base. Indeed, many businesses I have spoken to have had to create an entirely new page from scratch and while they can ask existing fans to ‘like’ the new page, the conversion rate of an attempt such as that is slim”

Link to e-web article here: http://www.ewebmarketing.com.au/blog/how-to-change-your-business-name-on-facebook/

I came across another article on the www.paperstreet.com blog.

The title of the article and the very first sentence had me hooked!

It’s easier than you think

“Updating information on your Twitter and Facebook page is generally pretty easy”

only to be disappointed as a read on that this person didn’t have the secret formula either!

“Changing your business name on your Facebook page usually requires approval from Facebook before it can take effect. Your claim may be denied if the proposed new name is not close enough to the current name or violates any of their page guidelines. If your Facebook page has not been used and has very few likes, the easiest thing may be to create a new page with the new name. However, this is never recommended for active pages with a large amount of likes and engagement.

For more information on how to change your page name, check out Facebook’s support section.”

Well that was disappointing!

I had resigned myself to the fact that they were not going to let me change the name of my page and I decided to just start over. I set up a new Facebook Page using my new company name, it was disappointing but I didn’t think I had any other options.
A Breakthrough!

Although I had already set up a new page and I was migrating my followers from my old Facebook page to my new Facebook page as best as I could (not easy). I decided it was still worthwhile to try and work out how to change the name of my previous page, as I could still benefit from the years of hard work, not to mention the money I had spent gaining likes.

I am not one to give up easily so I started doing more research, I even contacted other Facebook page owners that had successfully changed their name, only to learn that they had gone through weeks of rejection and had no ‘secret formula’. It just seemed that they lucked it!

I just kept trying different names, and then one day… it happened. They allowed the change! I have no idea why, I cannot tell you what the secret formula was, all I can say is that sometimes persistence pays off.

I recommend you just keep making requests until you get approved. Of course, you will need to come up with a dozen or so acceptable new names, so you can try different variations.

As the saying goes, “The squeaky wheel gets the oil” and in my case, I think my repetitive requests is what got me the name change in the end. Hopefully you don’t have to put in as many requests as I did (9 in total) but if that what it takes I guess it’s what you’ll have to do! Good Luck

How To Change Facebook Language Back To English
How To Change Facebook Language Back To English

Language Barrier

I just had a computer brought to me– a Windows 7 laptop. The owner said the language on her computer had changed. She mentioned she was on Facebook when it happened, so I turned it on and everything seemed normal. I opened her browser and went into her Facebook account and it was changed to what I discovered was Portuguese.

The hardest part is knowing where to click to fix things. (I’m assuming you can’t read the language enough to get it set back to English.)
How to fix it

If you’re using Chrome, you probably will have no problem if given the option to translate it. Otherwise, do the following:

Sign Into Your Facebook Account

Go Into Your Account Settings. That is the little upside down triangle, and when the menu drops down, it is divided into five sections with gray lines. The Settings option is in the fourth section, third item down.

Click on the Language symbol, blue ball, below the red ball with a white dash in it, and above the world globe.

Then, in the first line, click on the Edit option, whatever language it is in.

Then you get an option to choose your language in the drop-down menu.

Finally, click on the Blue Button, that in English, says Save Changes. It should work immediately.

I had to fix this problem before for someone else. How does this happen? I can only assume this happens when you download an Appand it changes the system settings.
