An important subset of personal context, social context refers to the people one knows and cares about. The“Jose Gonzales” with whom you have 5 mutual friends is a better result than those with no friends in common. Note that the better job search does at helping you find and connect, the better your search results will be going forward. While personal context makes use of things you care about, social context deals with the things your friends care about. Since calculating social context for every query is technically complex, we built a separate service for it. We will cover the details of this service in a future blog post.

The Query: We tokenize the query based on the suspected language (Chinese tokenized on characters, English on spaces), correct potential spelling mistakes, find "Elizabeth Jones" even though you typed in "Liz Jones," etc. We also prioritize results based on how they matched the query; e.g we rank entities with "chicago" in their title differently from those located in Chicago. We've made good progress in understanding queries, but have a lot more left to do.

Global Popularity: An entity popular amongst a large audience deserves high ranking. Someone searching “Michael Jackson” is more likely to want the pop star than a friend of a friend by the same name. To determine global popularity we look at how many people are connected to an entity as well as how engaged they are -- a Poker application with a few frequent users might be more relevant than one with several infrequent users.

Complexities of User-Centric Search
Our emphasis on personal and social context leads to some interesting technical challenges which make it different from the traditional search problem.
Ranking on the critical path: Since our most important ranking features depend on who the searcher is, all our feature generation and ranking happens as a part of the query execution workflow i.e. our indices can't store pre-ranked results to optimize lookups. . Instead, we have to generate ranking features like is_same_high_school and num_mutual_connections on the fly for every potential result, and run them through our ranking model to find the best results. Making this model better and faster is a major focus for the team this year.
No query cache: Caching allows a service to compute results once and reuse them across multiple requests. Usually a small number of unique queries make up a large portion of all requests (see Zipf's Law), so most search engines can cache the best results for their most popular queries. Good caching strategies can give you a 50-60% cache hit-rate - at a large scale, this means millions of dollars of savings and much improved performance.

Facebook search can’t use this huge optimization because the request is [user, query] and not [query]. We rarely see the same [user, query] more than once a day, rendering traditional caching models useless. Unlike most fast food chains, we wait till you order before we start cooking. Identifying novel caching opportunities is another key focus of our search team.
Large hot index: Another way search engines usually reduce work is to create a much smaller ‘hot’ index comprised of high quality documents. Enough results from the hot index means never having to hit the slower cold index. This works when the hot index contains the set of documents that have a high likelihood of being the best or ‘good enough’ for most queries. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as good-enough when you’re looking for a specific person on Facebook, rendering most of our index 'hot.’

Now that you have entered into the social world of Facebook, it’s time to send some friend requests, and maybe even accept some pending ones. If you’re new to Facebook, you probably have a list of people who are awaiting your friend request. Remember that as you type, Facebook tries to autocomplete what you’re looking for, meaning search results will appear below the Search box as you type.

When you see the person you think you want to add, click on her face; this takes you to her Timeline. At the bottom-right corner of her cover photo is an Add Friend button. To add this person as a friend, all you need to do is click the Add Friend button. Clicking this button sends a Friend Request. When she accepts, you’ll become friends.
You won’t be friends with someone until she confirms your Friend Request. After she confirms, you’re notified by a red flag appearing above the notifications icon in the blue bar on top.
So what does your potential friend see after you send a request? That depends on what you allow them to see.

"Poking" is a simple but addictive feature offered on Facebook. Poking your friends sends them an instant notification saying "(Your name) poked you." At this point, your friend gets the option to poke you back. Learning how (and when) to poke on Facebook just takes a minute or two, so open Facebook in another tab and follow along!
Learn what poking is. Before you poke someone for the first time, it's nice to know exactly what you're doing. Poking a friend does the following:
Sends your friend a notification saying "(Your name) poked you."
Gives your friend the option to poke you back, dismiss the poke, or ignore it.
Records the poke on your friend's poke page.
Note: Each poke is only visible to whichever friend you poke. In other words, besides your friend, no one else can see the poke.

Go to a friend's profile. Poking a friend is easy. To start, just visit the profile of the person you'd like to poke. You can do this by entering their name into the search bar, visiting your Friends page, clicking their name in your news feed, etc.
You can only poke friends — you won't get the option to poke on the pages of people you aren't friends with.
Click the "..." button. At the top of your friend's profile, you'll see a profile picture on the left, a cover photo stretching across the top, and a few buttons on the left side. Look for the one with an ellipses (three dots) on it. Click this button.
Click "Poke." This will send your friend a poke notification. Your friend can reply by poking you back or removing the poke.

You’ll first want to identify an audience that has a significant number attached to it. By this I mean you want to choose who will be fans of your Facebook page. And you’ll want to ensure that there are enough of them to warrant a 250,000 follower number. Thus, if you’re creating a Facebook page for dog owners, choose dog owners. Do not choose hairless chihuahua owners who live in Arizona. That second audience is far too small and you’ll never gain your desired following.
Once you’ve identified them, you’ll want to create a saved audience in the Facebook ads platform for this group. I recommend creating a half dozen versions of the audience and target them in different ways. For instance, you can choose people who like pages about dogs. You can also target people who follow other popular dog pages. There are even ways to target people based on their buying habits. So, create a few different ways that you’re going to target dog owners (again, the audience we’re using as an example).

Set up your Facebook page and fill in all the pertinent information. I also recommend creating an Instagram page at the same time since you can receive a lot of collateral benefits on Instagram from your activities on Facebook. For example, one of the pages that I’ve created on Facebook reached the 250,000 follower mark and the Instagram page reached 30,000 followers in that same time with almost no additional effort.
You’ll now want to find out what your audience is engaging with. Go to pages that speak to your target audience and study the posts they are putting up. Find out which ones are getting the most likes and shares. Then create a posting calendar for your page and emulate those posts. For instance, if you notice that people engage with cute images of dogs (which they do) at a high rate, then you’ll want to source as many of these posts as you can. They may also engage with training tips (which they do), so you’ll also want to work posts in about that topic as well.

It’s a simple way to cancel sent friend requests if you know the person’s Facebook user name. If you are a newbie Facebook user, then the steps given below might be useful for you.
On the Facebook search box, type the person’s user name and search for it.
If you have found the profile on which you want to cancel friend request, then browse through the person’s profile/Timeline page.
Hover the mouse over the friend request sent button at the top of the page.
Click on Cancel Request and confirm it.

How I changed my Facebook Business Page Name
I started a Facebook page for my business many years ago. I had spent thousands of dollars running ad campaigns and gaining likes. My business was part of a worldwide franchise, so I was using their brand in my Facebook Page Name (which I recommend you don’t do, I found out it can be hard to change!).

When branching out on my own, I wanted to keep the page, and the thousands of followers I had gained through my campaigns and years of running my business. I thought it would be simple enough, follow the Facebook Help instructions and simply request a name change.

Here are the instructions on Facebook to change your page name.
How do I change my Page’s name?
You’ll need to be an admin to request a change to your Page’s name.

To request a change to your Page’s name:
Click About on the left side of your Page
Click Edit Page Info
Enter a new Page name and click Save Changes
Review your request and click Request Change

Seems simple enough, right?
I soon found out… not so simple!
Every time I requested a new name, it would be rejected. After 3 attempts I decided to reach out to my network of professionals in the digital marketing/web space and even they were not sure what to do. Facebook make it extremely hard to change your page name, and even harder to contact someone to find out why!

I turned to Google for answers and I found all sorts of info on the web…
In the e-web marketing blog they say;

“Unfortunately it’s not as simple as that. In fact, for those of us with over 200 ‘likes’, changing your Facebook Page name is not an easy task. The Facebook Help Centre doesn’t provide much assistance either, with the only answer to changing your name being that, well, you can’t. This is clearly a big problem for businesses that have spent time and effort building their fan base. Indeed, many businesses I have spoken to have had to create an entirely new page from scratch and while they can ask existing fans to ‘like’ the new page, the conversion rate of an attempt such as that is slim”

I came across another article on the www.paperstreet.com blog.

The title of the article and the very first sentence had me hooked!

It’s easier than you think
“Updating information on your Twitter and Facebook page is generally pretty easy”
only to be disappointed as a read on that this person didn’t have the secret formula either!
“Changing your business name on your Facebook page usually requires approval from Facebook before it can take effect. Your claim may be denied if the proposed new name is not close enough to the current name or violates any of their page guidelines. If your Facebook page has not been used and has very few likes, the easiest thing may be to create a new page with the new name. However, this is never recommended for active pages with a large amount of likes and engagement.

Well that was disappointing!

I had resigned myself to the fact that they were not going to let me change the name of my page and I decided to just start over. I set up a new Facebook Page using my new company name, it was disappointing but I didn’t think I had any other options.
A Breakthrough!

Although I had already set up a new page and I was migrating my followers from my old Facebook page to my new Facebook page as best as I could (not easy). I decided it was still worthwhile to try and work out how to change the name of my previous page, as I could still benefit from the years of hard work, not to mention the money I had spent gaining likes.

I am not one to give up easily so I started doing more research, I even contacted other Facebook page owners that had successfully changed their name, only to learn that they had gone through weeks of rejection and had no ‘secret formula’. It just seemed that they lucked it!

I just kept trying different names, and then one day… it happened. They allowed the change! I have no idea why, I cannot tell you what the secret formula was, all I can say is that sometimes persistence pays off.

I recommend you just keep making requests until you get approved. Of course, you will need to come up with a dozen or so acceptable new names, so you can try different variations.

As the saying goes, “The squeaky wheel gets the oil” and in my case, I think my repetitive requests is what got me the name change in the end. Hopefully you don’t have to put in as many requests as I did (9 in total) but if that what it takes I guess it’s what you’ll have to do! Good Luck
