How to Edit Your Facebook Profile
Learning how to edit your Facebook profile can be tricky because the social network keeps changing the layout and options for entering and displaying each user's personal information.

Your profile area on the network has a lot of different components. The two key elements are your Facebook Timeline (listing all the posts and activities by and about you on the network) and your About area (displaying your personal information in a bunch of different sections.)

Finding Your Facebook Profile

Facebook profile.

You can access your Facebook profile page by clicking on your small personal photo in the upper right navigation bar.

Understanding the Facebook Profile and Timeline Layout

Facebook profile page example.

If you click on your own profile photo from anywhere in Facebook, you land on the page that's often called Timeline and used to be called your "Wall." It's basically your profile page, and Facebook crams a lot of different stuff in here and changes it fairly often.

The profile page (shown above) encompasses both your "Timeline" and "About" sections. It was redesigned again in early 2013 to feature two columns, each with different purposes. The two columns are outlined in red in the image above.

The one on the right is your activity Timeline, displaying all of the Facebook activity about you. The column on the left is your "About" area, showing your personal information and favorite apps.
Tabs for Timeline, About

You'll notice four tabs below your profile picture. The first two are called Timeline and About. You can edit either your Timeline or About information by clicking on those tabs to go to the Timeline or About pages.

Facebook "About" page allows you to edit personal info.

On your Facebook profile page, click the "About" tab below and to the right of your photo to see and edit your personal information. The "About" area encompasses not just your biographical details, but also information about your favorite apps on the network, pages you've liked and media you consume.

By default, your "About" page has two boxes at the very top, but you can reorder them. "Work and Education" are on the left top and "Living" appears on the right. The "Living" boxes show where you live now and have lived previously.

Below those boxes is another for "Relationships and family" on the left, and two more--"Basic information" and "contact information"-- on the right.

Next comes the Photos section, followed by Friends, Facebook Places, Music, Movies, Books, Likes (organizations or entities you have liked on Facebook), Groups, Fitness, and Notes.
Change the Contents of Any Section

Edit the content inside any of these sections by clicking on the small pencil icon at the top right of the box. Pop-up or drop-down menus will guide you on where to enter various kinds of information.

Visit our Facebook Cover Photo guide to learn more about managing your cover photo at the top of the page.

Changing the Order of Facebook Profile Sections

Drop-down menu lets you rearrange, add or delete sections in your "About" area.

To delete, add or rearrange any or all of the "About" sections, click the tiny pencil icon at the top right of the About page and then select "Edit Sections."

A drop-down will appear listing all the sections. Check or uncheck to hide or show the ones you want. Then drag and drop them to rearrange the order in which they appear on your profile page.

Click the blue "Save" button at the very bottom when you are finished.

You can add other apps to your About page, too, so long as you have already installed the app. Look for the "Add to Profile" button on the app page and click it. Then the app should show up as a small module on your About page.

How to Recover Your Facebook Account When You Can No Longer Log In

Did you forget your password and can no longer log in? Or was your account hacked?

You are not alone! Hundreds of people turn to us with similar questions every day. Fortunately, Facebook offers several automated ways to reclaim your account. Whether you forgot your password or can no longer log in because a hacker changed it, you have several options. We’ll show you how to recover your Facebook account, step-by-step.

Note: This article covers everything I know about Facebook account recovery. Read this article, read the comments, and if you still have questions, leave your own comment and hope for the best. There’s nothing more I know or can do to help.
1. Are You Still Logged In Somewhere?

Before you try to recover your account, check whether you are still logged into Facebook on any of your devices. This could be another browser or browser profile on your computer, your Facebook Android or iOS app, or a mobile browser, for example on your tablet.

If you can access Facebook anywhere, proceed to step 1a of our article on what to do when your Facebook account got hacked.4 Things to Do Immediately When Your Facebook Account Is Hacked 4 Things to Do Immediately When Your Facebook Account Is HackedHaving your Facebook account hacked is a nightmare. A stranger now has access to all your personal information and could harass your friends and followers. Here's what you can do to contain the damage.Read More

Note: If you set up two-factor authentication and have lost access to your Code Generator, here’s how to recover your account.

2. Have You Tried the Default Account Recovery Options Yet?

OK, so you could not find a device where you were still logged into Facebook. Let’s proceed with the recovery then. If possible, use a network or computer from which you’ve logged into your Facebook account before.

First, you need to identify your account. Head to the Facebook recover page and use an email address or phone number you previously added to your Facebook account. Even if it doesn’t say so, you can also use your Facebook username.

Once you successfully managed to identify your account, you will see a summary of your profile. Before you proceed, carefully check whether this really is your account and whether you still have access to the email address(es) or mobile phone number(s) listed.

Should you No longer have access to these? proceed to point 3 of this article.

If all looks well with the contact details that Facebook has on file for you, however, click Continue. Facebook will send you a security code. Retrieve it, enter it, and rejoice in having recovered your account.

If the code never arrives, click Didn’t get a code?, which will take you back to the previous Reset Your Password screen. You can try again or maybe you’ll realize that you don’t have access to the account/s after all.
Back Into Your Account

If you managed to regain access to your account and if you suspect that your account was hacked, immediately change your password (use a strong password!) and update your contact information. These are key steps in securing your Facebook account. Be sure to remove any email addresses or phone numbers that are not your own or that you can no longer access.5 Things You Can Do NOW To Secure Your Facebook Account & Make It Recoverable 5 Things You Can Do NOW To Secure Your Facebook Account & Make It Recoverable To most of us this is the biggest nightmare. We strongly recommend that you enable two-factor authentication, so this won’t happen again.
3. Did Your Contact Information Change?

Often, it’s not possible to recover an account using the options above. Maybe you no longer have access to the email address(es) and phone number(s) you once added to your profile. Or maybe a hacker changed this information. In that case, Facebook allows you to specify a new email address, which they will use to contact you about recovering your account.

To start this process, click the link No longer have access to these? in the bottom left on the reset password page to start the recovery process. Facebook will ask you for a new email address or phone number, so that they can reach out to you if needed. Click Continue to proceed.

If you have set up Trusted Contacts, you will have the chance to use these to recover your account in the next step.

You’ll need to remember at least one full name of your three to five Trusted Contacts to reveal all of them. Note that you only need three codes to recover your account.

If you didn’t set up Trusted Contacts, you might be given the option to answer one of your security questions and reset your password on the spot. As an additional precaution, this comes with a 24 hour waiting period before you can access your account.

Otherwise, you might have to wait until Facebook gets in touch to verify your identity. Be patient!
4. Was Your Account Hacked & Is Sending Out Spam?

In the event that your account was hacked and is posting spam to the walls of your friends while you can no longer access it, you should report your Facebook account as compromised.

This will actually start a similar yet different process as the one outlined above. While you will use the same information to identify your account, in the following step you will be able to use either a current or an old Facebook password to recover your account.

This is useful in case a hacker changed your password, but it may also come in handy in case you forgot your new password.

Find more security-related tips on the Account Security page in the Facebook Help Center.

5. Still Locked Out of Facebook?

If all of the recovery methods above failed, your last hope is Facebook itself. You can try emailing security@facebookmail.com to explain your situation. They might give you a chance to prove your identity using your passport or driver’s license. This can take several weeks, so practice patience.

Note: If you didn’t use your real name on Facebook, your hopes for recovering your account this way are close to zero.

4
Type the name of the business where you have worked. Don’t add the city/state info. The name is good enough. It will display a list of filtered results as you type.
Sometimes, when there is no business such as what was typed completely, you’ll see a line called “Add (Business name)”.
Click the correct business.

5
Click the “Edit” link to more clearly acknowledge the proper years you’ve worked at the business and define what you did, what awards you earned, etc. Then, click "Add Job" when you finish.

6
Click the “Done Editing” box at the top right hand corner of the Work and Education box as was originally labeled.

It will accept almost any city/state that is located globally too, but it may take a bit more typing, with the provinces and such. So be forewarned.

Sometimes, Facebook profile information, has been known to provide people with alternate jobs. But, since you control the “action”, you can control what you post, and internally some of this information won’t be seen.
You can also play with making certain items private or to a select group of friends (Friends setting) or the friends of your Facebook friends (Friends-of-Friends setting), if you want, or, in some cases, to a select amount of people (using the "Custom")settings. Facebook seems to only deem everything to be fully public (the Everyone setting), no matter the item you are dealing in the very beginning. You'll have to play with this idea for each individual setting you'd like to fix.
Play with whatever settings you deem to be enough information. You are the person who decides the rules on what information you want (and don't want) displayed.
As you play with adding "Life Events" to your Facebook timeline, you'll be introduced to a brand new box called "History by year" where the only way to edit these events, is to edit the event from your timeline.

Warnings

Since passwords and your Facebook username are two secure pieces of data, Facebook doesn’t allow anyone to edit this personal information here. Nor does it allow you to edit your mobile phone number or other secure personal data here. You’ll need to edit this information from the “Account Settings” link, located under the link in the top right corner of any Facebook page located under the drop-down link initially known as “Home”.
