How to permanently DELETE Your Facebook Account
Are you living life or are you just talking about it? One of the biggest problems with Facebook is the more time we spend updating our profile and following other people’s lives, the less time we actually spend living.

Of course, there are other concerns with Facebook, and there has been considerable controversy surrounding the company’s willingness to sell information to potential advertisers. Recently, a leaked document suggested that Facebook was offering advertisers the opportunity to sell to teenagers at times when their posts indicated they needed a bit of a confidence boost. In other words, indicating a proclivity to exploit young people at times when they were emotionally vulnerable. These accusations, alongside recent fines for breaking data collection laws in Europe, make the social media behemoth look a little less like a Facebook friend and more like his evil twin.

So, if you want to liberate yourself from the clutches of Facebook, how can you achieve this freedom?

Inevitably, it’s not as easy as it would initially seem. Just as your computer holds data, background information, and paths to documents, social media holds onto a network of information that lurks in the background and remains in cyberspace – gone, but not forgotten.

With Facebook constantly updating their privacy policies, you can’t simply hit delete and expect to disappear from the face of social media. Deactivating your account is straightforward, but this doesn’t mean it has been deleted. If you return at a later date wishing to reactivate your account, you’ll discover that all your information is still there, waiting to be restored. If you actually delete your account, there is no way to access it again in the future and the content will be irretrievable.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to how to perform the ultimate Facebook disappearing act:
1. Delete linked apps
One of Facebook’s useful functions is the ability to use our Facebook account to login to other applications, such as Instagram, Pinterest or Spotify. We often fail to consider that this function means we are giving out information every time we use it, letting others access and store our personal information. The first step to Facebook freedom is to remove those apps that are linked to your Facebook account.
First, click on the arrow in the top right-hand corner of your Facebook page. Then select “Settings” and click on “Apps” situated in the column on the left-hand side of the page.
Click on the edit button under the heading “Apps, websites and plug-ins”
Once you have disabled the platform, you can begin deleting the apps that are linked to your account.
2. Remove activity history
Now you need to clear up your virtual footprints that leave a path of your recent activity. From the downward arrow menu, select “Activity Log” and then use the edit button to delete or unlike each action listed in your log.
3. Backup data
If you want to keep hold of the information linked to your account, such as photos you have posted and the names of the friends you had within that account, you will want to download a backup of your account data.

Once again, go to your settings menu.
In “General Account Settings”, select the option that allows you to download a copy of all your data.
You will then receive an email with a link to your download archive. The archive will be saved into your Downloads folder on your computer. This is a zip file which, when opened, reveals all your photos, as well as several html files listing your friends, advertisers and almost everything else that probably inspired you to exit Facebook in the first place.
4. Deactivate account
This next step is probably the most bewildering! Facebook wants to send you on a wild goose chase, making the option to deactivate your account easy to find and desperately pointing you in this direction. Why? Because deactivation is not deletion. Deactivation means you can just log in again and carry on as if nothing happened. So, if you’re not completely certain you want to depart from the world of Facebook forever, just deactivate your account and then, if you change your mind, you can always login again and carry on where you left off. While deactivated, your friends will not be able to post to your account or send messages.
Once again, go to your settings menu.
Select “General” at the top of the left-hand menu.
Then click on “Manage your account” and scroll down to where it gives you the option to deactivate.
5. Delete account
Despite many efforts, finding the link to delete your account is virtually impossible. The only way I discovered it was by clicking on the help menu and then searching for “delete account”. In the answer, there is a link called “let us know”. Click on this link and it will redirect you to a page which will – finally – allow you to permanently delete your account.

Now all you must do is click on “delete my account”, enter your password and submit captcha and you are finally free… well, nearly!
Surely you didn’t think Facebook would let you go that easily, did you? Even though you have managed to unearth the hidden link that will allow complete deletion of your account, Facebook will hold onto the information and postpone the deletion for 14 days, in the hopes that you will change your mind and hurry back into the Facebook fold. If you should access Facebook or any affiliated site during these two weeks, the deletion request will be automatically removed and you’ll once again be a Facebook follower.

So, find your footprint, get rid of it and swap your virtual stories and Facebook friends for real life and physical friends who can actually give you a hug, rather than sending a half-hearted emoticon or a thumbs up!

How to delete a Facebook account permanently in 3 simple steps
Whether you’re concerned about your online privacy or just getting tired of constant status updates from old school friends that you’ve since realised aren’t actually that cool, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to delete your Facebook account – and it’s not as hard as you might think.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of how to delete Facebook step-by-step, including outlining the difference between ‘deactivating’ your account, and deleting it entirely.
If you’re thinking about deleting your account then you’re not alone. Between the Cambridge Analtyica scandal and increasing worries about the effect social media has on our individual and societal health, people are increasingly turning away from these sites that have come to dominate the internet.
Whatever your reason, deleting or deactivating your account is actually pretty easy. Here’s how you do it.
How to Delete your Facebook Account
How to delete or deactivate a Facebook account – what’s the difference?
There are two different ways to get your Facebook account offline. The first is deactivating, which means:
You can reactivate your account whenever you want
People can’t see your Facebook Timeline, or search for you
Some information may remain visible (like messages you’ve sent)
Facebook saves your account info (like friends and interests) in case you reactivate
Latest

But deleting your account is a much more serious matter. If you delete your account:
Facebook delays deletion for a few days after the request is made. If you log in during the grace period, the deletion is cancelled
You can’t regain access to your Facebook account once it’s deleted
It can take up to 90 days for your data that’s stored in backup systems to be deleted. However, your info isn’t accessible on Facebook during this time
Some things aren’t stored in your account, like messages that you’ve sent to friends – these will remain active
Copies of some material (like log records) may remain in Facebook’s database, but are “disassociated from personal identifiers,” according to the company

Basically, deactivating is a way to cool off from Facebook for a while, while deleting is a permanent solution that you should think carefully about before choosing.

Plus, you may miss out on some ‘dank memes’ by deleting Facebook, and however grating it is in places, it’s also useful for plenty of things, such as keeping up with friends from abroad and organising events.

Had enough of Facebook? Here's how to permanently remove your profile from the social network

Facebook can be a great tool for staying in touch with friends and family but, for some people, the constant bombardment of updates, messages, likes, pokes and advertisements can all become a bit overwhelming, not to mention highly addictive.

In a study by researchers at the University of Winchester, ten self-confessed Facebook “addicts” were asked to stop using their accounts for four weeks. Many quickly became isolated from friends and family and reported feeling "cut off from the world".

How to Completely Delete Facebook From Your Life

If you're seriously considering deleting your Facebook account, you're not alone.

Start typing in the letters "dele" into Google and you'll see "delete Facebook account" as a top suggestion. Whether it's to alleviate privacy concerns or avoid digital distractions, more people are trying to figure out how to fully disconnect themselves from the social network giant that we live and breathe.

For those ready to call it quits, you're in for a surprise — it's more difficult than you think to erase yourself permanently. With its ever-changing privacy policies, becoming Facebook-free requires more steps than just hitting the delete button and saying goodbye.
Keep in mind deletion is not the same as deactivation. You can deactivate your account at any time, which means your Timeline and information will disappear from Facebook until you reactivate your account. When reactivated, your information is restored.

Deleting your account means you can never, ever access your account again, and you won't be able to retrieve any of your content or information.

Most of your personal data, like your email and mailing address, is removed from Facebook, but some information, such as messages and photos, may remain on its server for "technical reasons." Facebook's Help Center also says the data left behind will no longer be identifiable or searchable as your own, and that it will be inaccessible to other people using Facebook.

If you 100% want out, follow the step-by-step guide below to erase your Facebook footprint and make sure your account is gone for good.
1. Back up your Facebook information.

Facebook allows you to download a copy of your data, which includes your posts, photos and more.

Image: Screenshot Kyli Singh

Save photos, contact and birthday information and other data you'll need while your account is still running. Once your account is deleted, this information will be inaccessible.

We recommend downloading a copy of your Facebook data, which comes in the form of a ZIP file consisting of all your posts, including photos and videos. Here's how:

Click on the padlock icon at the upper right-hand corner of your Facebook.

Select "See More Settings."

Click “General,” the first option in the menu.

Click “Download a copy of your Facebook data.”

Finish by clicking “Start My Archive.”

Once the ZIP file has downloaded, save it in a safe place on your computer or hard drive.

For more details about where you can find your Facebook data, see the full breakdown here.

To save individual photos, click “Options” at the bottom of the photo and select “Download.”

Under Facebook's Terms of Service, when you delete your photos and videos (also known as IP content) or your account, it is erased in a way similar to emptying the recycle bin on your computer. Removed content may exist in backup copies for a "reasonable period of time," but will not be available to others unless someone who had previous access to the photo or video has a direct link to it. Photos will only live in the content delivery network's cache for a restricted amount of time, according to CNET.

2. Check your linked apps.

Take a look at what apps are connected to your Facebook account. Then, change your form of login on these apps.

Image: Screenshot Kyli Singh

Facebook has become so ingrained in our web activity that we have used it to sign up and log in to most third-party apps, games or websites.

See also: 10 Tips and Tricks for the Facebook iPhone App

We log in with our social network accounts to save time and help the app become better personalized for us. But without realizing it, we're actually giving third-party developers permission to access, store and update the precious information we share.

What information exactly? Our "basic information," which includes our user ID, any public information and our friend list.

Here's how to check the apps connected to your Facebook account:

Click the downward arrow at the top right-hand corner of Facebook.

Select "Settings."

Click "Apps" in the left-hand column.

Popular apps that may be listed here are Pinterest, Instagram, Spotify and Pandora.

However, some apps such as Tinder will only allow you to use the app with a Facebook account. If this is the case, you'll need to decide if you absolutely can't live without that app and rethink deleting Facebook.

The trick here is to go to these apps and see if you can change your form of login by using your email address or Twitter handle instead. Your goal is to completely cut off any association between the app and your Facebook account.
3. Turn off your apps on Facebook.

Here's where to click to turn off your "platform" and remove apps from Facebook.

Image: Screenshot Kyli Singh

Once you've changed your form of login in the apps, it's a good idea to remove and disable them in your Facebook settings to be safe:
Click the downward arrow at the top right-hand corner of Facebook.

Click "Settings."

Select "Apps" in the left-hand column.

Remove each app on the list by clicking the "x" next to it.

A pop-up will ask you to confirm the removal of the app. Check off "Delete all your [app name] activity on Facebook. This may take a few minutes." Now, hit the "Remove" button.

Then, click "Edit" (this is to the right of "Use apps, plugins, games and websites on Facebook and elsewhere?")

Click "Turn Off Platform."

By turning off the platform and removing the apps, information about your apps cannot be recovered, and your user ID will no longer be shared with the applications.
4. See what information remains on your apps.

Unfortunately, getting rid of your information doesn't end there.

The apps you've used are maintained by outside businesses and developers who are not a part of Facebook, and may still hold onto the information you've shared in the past.

If you're concerned about this, Facebook recommends contacting the app directly to request they delete your data, and reviewing the app's privacy policy. The good news is that Facebook's policy requires developers and operators of applications and websites delete all your data received from Facebook if you ask them to do so.

Before contacting the third-party app, take a look at its privacy policies to understand how the app collects, shares and uses your information. Here are the privacy policy pages of common Facebook-connected apps:

Facebook: Here’s How to Deactivate Your Account

Did you know Facebook allows you to temporarily deactivate your account? This allows you to stop others from viewing your profile and content, without actually deleting any of your information. If you ever want to come back to Facebook later on, you can reactivate your account by logging into Facebook with your email address and password.

Our guide will show you how to deactivate your account from within the Facebook mobile application.

Note: These screenshots were captured in the Facebook app on iOS. Also note, when you deactivate your Facebook account, you can still chat with friends on Messenger.

Step 1: Tap the three lines in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap “Setting & Privacy.”

Step 3: Tap “Account Settings.”

Step 4: Tap “General.”

Step 5: Tap “Manage Account.”

Step 6: Tap “Deactivate.” You may be asked to enter your password after doing so.

Step 7: Scroll down and tap the circle to the left of the option that best describes why you want to deactivate your account. You can tap the circle next to “Other, please explain further:” if you want to enter your own reason.

Important Note: If you select “This is temporary. I’ll be back.” Facebook will set your account to automatically reactivate after seven days. This setting can be customized to anywhere between one and seven days, but you can’t stop the reactivation from happening. If you don’t want your account to automatically reactivate, you’ll need to select a different choice for why you’re deactivating your account.

Step 8 (optional): Depending on your choice, a window may appear describing how you can address the issue without deactivating your account. If you want to continue with the deactivation process, tap “Close.”

Step 9 (optional): When you deactivate your account, you may still receive emails from Facebook related to things like event invitations and photos you’ve been tagged in. Tap the box to the left of “Opt out of receiving future emails from Facebook” to prevent Facebook from sending these emails.

Step 10: Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap “Deactivate.” This will log you out of the Facebook app and deactivate your account.
