The social network can be great for keeping people in touch, but it can also be a huge waste of time

Mark Zuckerberg kicked off Facebook’s F8 developer conference this week with a keynote detailing a number of his grand visions of the future.

Augmented reality, advanced chat bots and a rather grim-looking social VR app called Spaces are the next-generation products Mr Zuckerberg will use to keep us glued to our screens.


While the social network is a handy tool for staying in touch with friends and organising events, it's become bigger and far more powerful than the site many of us originally signed up to.


Facebook can be and has been called out for a wide range of perceived misdemeanors. In some circles, it's long been viewed as a rather sinister threat to privacy and criticised for its tax practices, but more recent issues, such as the spread of fake news, the site’s approach to illegal content and incredibly disturbing uses of Facebook Live are particularly troubling.

However, for many, it’s simply a colossal waste of time.

Deactivate

Unless you’re absolutely sure you want to get rid of your Facebook account once and for all, we’d recommend going down the deactivation route.

Deactivating your account hides your profile from friends and search, but allows you to resurrect your account – complete with friends, updates, pictures and Likes – if you ever decide to return, simply by entering your login information.

To deactivate your Facebook account:
Click the downwards-pointing arrow in the top-right corner of the screen
Select Settings
Open the Security section
Choose the Deactivate Your Account option at the bottom of the menu
Delete

Deleting your account is a major step, so think it through before committing. Facebook can take up to 90 days to process account deletion requests, but once your account's gone, it’s gone.

Before taking the plunge, it’s well worth downloading a copy of the data Facebook has on you.

To do this:
Click the downwards-pointing arrow in the top-right corner of the screen
Select Download a copy of your Facebook data

Once that’s done, you’re ready to delete your account. Bear in mind, however, that your sent messages will continue to exist even when all other traces of your account are gone.

If you've decided to quit Facebook then this feature shows you how. Discover how to quickly, and permanently, delete your entire Facebook account and history.

There are two ways of looking at Facebook: one is that it's a fantastic website for keeping in touch with friends and family; Facebook makes it easy to share messages, snippets of information about your life and photos or videos. (Indeed, such a reputable website as Macworld has a Facebook page.)

Then there's the other view: Facebook is a CIA-funded spy-tool and social nightmare. Facebook's recent experiment in changing posts to adjust the mood of its users didn't help it in this regard.

With the recent revelations about Facebook and Cambridge Analytica's data harvesting (50 million user profiles were harvested illegitimately by Cambridge Analytica and used to target voters in the US elections and during the Brexit campaign) it's no surprise that lots of people are trying to close down their Facebook accounts. But this isn't a new thing.

Back in 2014 Erin Kissane, Director of content at Open News, summed up feelings towards Facebook: "Get off Facebook. Get your family off Facebook. If you work there, quit. They're F****** awful."

If you've decided that Facebook is no longer a service you wish to use, this tutorial will show you how to get rid of your Facebook account. Before we start though, you will want to download your data or you may never see those photos of you in the pub after work again.

Step 1: Download all your Facebook data

Before you delete your Facebook account, you should make you have copies of all your data that you have on Facebook. Particularly your photographs. Do this manually, by clicking the Download link next to any pictures you want to save and by copying and pasting text from Facebook to Text Edit.



If you want to keep a copy of everything, then consider downloading all of your Facebook data. Follow these steps:
How to download all your data from Facebook in one go
Log in to Facebook.
Click on Menu (the small arrow in the top right of the Facebook screen) and choose Settings.
Click Download A Copy of my Facebook Data.
Click Start My Archive > Start My Archive and OK.

Facebook will now start to archive all of your information and will send an email to you when the archive is ready to be downloaded. The file you download will contain all of the following:
Posts, photos and videos you've shared.
Your messages and chat conversations.
Info from the About section of your Profile.

There is also a lot of other information from your Facebook account. You can see all of the data that is downloaded in the file from this Facebook page.

Tip! You can download an archive of your Facebook data even if you don't intend to delete your page just so you can check what Facebook information is on file.
Step 2: Clear your Facebook history

The next step you need to take before deleting your Facebook account is to get rid of any recent comments. When you delete your Facebook account, the information may stick around for up to 14 days. This delay isn't ideal if you are in a hurry to get rid of an incriminating account.



In the meantime, you can start to delete personal information.
Here is how to delete a Post from Facebook:
Login to Facebook using your account.
Click on your Account name in the top-left corner of the screen.
Click the Arrow next to a post you want to remove, and choose Delete from the drop-down menu.
Check the Delete All Your iOS Activity box.
Click Delete to remove the post.
Step 3: Delete photos from Facebook

Before you deactivate your Facebook account, you should remove any photos associated with your account.

Here is how to remove Facebook photos:
Log in to Facebook.
Click your Account name in the top-left corner of the screen.
Click on Photos.
Click the Edit Or Remove button next to an unwanted photo, now choose Delete This Photo.
Click Confirm.

You can only delete photos that have been uploaded by you; you cannot delete photos of you uploaded by other people. These may be tagged as you, however (which identifies you), and you can remove this tag.
Login to Facebook and click on your name in the top-left corner.
Click Photos of You.
Click Edit or Remove and choose Remove/Report Tag.
Place a tick next to I Want To Untag Myself, and tick I Want This Photo Removed from Facebook. You have three options here:
I Don’t Like This Photo Of Me
I Think This Photo Shouldn't be on FaceBook
It’s spam.

Pick the one you want and click on and click Continue. You will get another menu asking for more information (if you pick I Don’t Like This Photo Of Me). Choose the one you want and click Continue.

How To Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account

There are many different reasons you may want to completely obliterate your Facebook profile.
For this scenario let’s just say you decided to go 
Although Facebook discourages you to delete your facebook account permanently, they do provide the option, although a bit buried.

Step 1: Backup all of your data

First of all, it’s time to backup all posts, videos and photos.
Click the “down arrow” in the upper right-hand corner
Go to ‘Settings’
In General Account Settings, Click ‘download a copy of all your Facebook data’, download archive.

Step 2: Deactivate your account

Click the “down arrow” in the upper right-hand corner, account settings, click security on the left menu, then click deactivate your account.
You’ll also be asked to give a reason why you’re leaving.
Now all your Facebook data will be de-indexed but will be able to be easily restored.

Step 3: Delete your Facebook account

Click on the “lock” icon in the upper right-hand corner, click the “magnifying glass” icon and then search for “delete”.
Click on the result near the bottom that says “How do i permanently delete my account”. Now scroll down till you see the “Let us know” link. Click the delete my account. Put in your password, submit captcha. Hit OK. That’s it.

  • Do other sites and apps use your Facebook account to login and authenticate you?
  • Do employers, landlords or universities rely on social media profiles to screen you?
